Kansas City Southern Diesel EMD SD60
Road Number KCS 718
EMD's first entry in the third generation of diesel power, the SD60 introduced the new 710G prime mover, along with microprocessor controls. Railroads found these ruffed units would outperform SD40-2s and quickly put them to work in heavy freight service, but they could also be seen on the point of fast freights as well. These models capture the 5" line of its prototype. Inside, there's a five-pole skew-wound armature motor with dual flywheels, driving a low friction mechanism. Directional lighting is also standard. Full pilots and body-mount Rapido-type couplers make each model look more realistic. Highly detailed EMD HTC-type trucks and separate handrails add to the realism. For service in colder climates, an optional pilot plow and winterization hatch area are included to match prototypes that used them.
